Template:Infobox playerEdgar Russells is a rookie running back for the Downriver Waves.
Biography
Edgar started his sports career playing rugby, as he had the size to compete with even the largest of players. He had the strength, but lacked the speed of some of the more successful individuals in the sport, but played all through high school.
Having always been told he'd be better suited for American Football than rugby, Edgar went to college in America to see how the game was played first-hand. Very few teams wanted to take a chance on a player who had never actually played Football, but Illinois State's coach was intrigued by the large hedgehog's desire to learn more.
Rugby had prepared the hedgehog better than the coach could have expected, and despite his size, Edgar could hold onto the ball and run at a fair pace, and his quills made him a fearsome opponent. In the four years he'd been in college, Edgar developed into a true powerback, his coach encouraging him to put on weight and to keep building muscle so he could really power through the defensive line.
Edgar was a key player in IU's football team by the time he left, bringing the college some notoriety as the FCAA's largest running back ever. Now he's putting his name in the draft in hopes that a professional team will see the potential he has as a uniquely skilled player.
Evaluation
3 stars. Excels as a short-yardage/goal-line back, especially between the tackles. Difficult to take down. Conditioning and weight concerns if hoping for a long career tenure. There’s big backs, and then there’s Edgar. I just hope whoever drafts him doesn’t just do it as a marketing novelty. He would be my go-to hedgie on 3rd-and-1 or 4th-and-goal at the 1, and I wouldn’t want him rumbling through my secondary. Speed is obviously not his forte, so Edgar to me would be a niche back brought in for short-yardage conversions...though I’d love to see him get a screen pass and barrel downfield with his linemen!
