Mtendere Idowu is a Wide Receiver for the Chicago Outlaws in the UFFL.

Biography

Mtendere means "peace' in Chichewa, the antelope's native tongue back in Malawi. That's exactly what his parents hoped for when they escaped war by moving to South Africa, and then after his birth to Vancouver, and dropping the young buck in a school full of hypocritical preteens for ESL classes. Eastern Vancouver was safe, but his classmates were unused to dealing with international students. In the late 2000's, Mtendere started football in high school, and gravitated to the sport mostly because of the teamwork and inner grit needed to claim victory. Although Canadian football rules can be different from American ones, ulimately all he needed to know was how to catch the ball - which he was profoundly good at doing.

Itowu's claim to fame was a 2016 game wherein he dove underneath and through the legs of defending jaguar Zway'Ze Williams in the final game of the season to keep a drive alive. It made the highlight reels in the sports media world for that week, and his name was not forgotten when the UFFL draft rolled around the following summer. However, Itowu opted not to put his name in until he completed his degree, stating that "He just wanted to get the education first." In that way, Itowu's a rather humble being with amazing speed but is drawn back by particulars surrounding his size and agility when compared to other receivers.

Rookie Scouting Report

Brock Brezniski: I admire Mtendere for opting to stay in school for his senior year, but I think he would have been a higher pick last year. Smaller receivers usually are faster and more agile, and while he has the speed, his agility is average, which is a bit of a surprise. Either way, Mtendere can stretch defenses and make them respect him as a deep threat, and he can also double as a kick returner as well.
